Comparison of values of Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation coefficient on the same sets of data

چکیده
Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (denoted here by rs) is a nonparametric (distribution-free) rank statistic proposed by Charles Spearman as a measure of the strength of the associations between two variables. It is a measure of a monotone association that is used when the distribution of the data makes Pearson’s correlation coefficient undesirable or misleading. Spearman’s coefficient is not a measure of the linear relationship between two variables, as some ”statisticians” declare. It assesses how well an arbitrary monotonic function can describe the relationship between two variables, without making any assumptions about the frequency distribution of the variables. Unlike Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient, it does not require the assumption that the relationship between the variables is linear, nor does it require the variables to be measured on interval scales; it can be used for variables measured at the ordinal level. In principle, rs is simply a special case of Pearson’s product-moment coefficient in which the data are converted to ranks before calculating the coefficient. Charles Spearman developed his rank correlation in 1904. However, his statistical work was not appreciated by his University College colleague Karl Pearson and there was a long feud between them. Nowadays, the coefficient rs is widely used in statistical analysis. In the presentation we would like to compare it values and significance for different sets of data (original for Pearson’s coefficient and ranked data for Spearman’s coefficient). What inspired this presentation was a paper by Plata (2006).

If both height and weight are normally distributed, we use the Pearson’s correlation; otherwise Spearman’s correlation coefficient will be presented. Spearman’s correlation is also applicable for two categorical ordinal variables like pain intensity (no, mild, moderate, severe) with burn-surface-area (< 10%, 10% 19%, 20% 29%, ≥ 30%). Table I shows the correlation coefficient between height and ...
متن کاملIncreasing the Accuracy of Blood Hematocrit Measurement by Triplicate Wavelength Photoplethysmography Method
Background and objectives: The importance of continuous monitoring and rapid and accurate informing of changes in blood components (e.g., percentage of hematocrit [HCT]), especially in acute conditions, has motivated researchers to use non-invasive measurement methods. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between blood HCT and photoplethysmographic signal and the possibility ...
متن کاملPearson’s coefficient between intuitionistic fuzzy sets
The correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) is one of the most frequently used tools in statistics. In this paper we discuss a correlation coefficient between Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets (A-IFSs). We have constructed the coefficient so it provides the strength of the relationship between A-IFSs and also shows if the considered sets are positively or negatively correlated. Next, the prop...
متن کاملPrediction of rock strength parameters for an Iranian oil field using neuro-fuzzy method
Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and internal friction coefficient (µ) are the most important strength parameters of rock. They could be determined either by laboratory tests or from empirical correlations. The laboratory analysis sometimes is not possible for many reasons. On the other hand, Due to changes in rock compositions and properties, none of the correlations could be applied as an ...
